Neal Hegarty

I come from a family of Irish dairy farmers and have worked all my adult life on sustainable permaculture projects. I’ve had the great fortune to have learned from and worked for some true masters in their field like – Agro-forestry experts El finca por venir, Bio-intensive vegetable growers like Caoba farms, diverse profitable permaculture farms like Atitlan Organics, indigenous community farmers IMAP, mushroom cultivation experts like Fungi academy and rotational grazing pioneers Finca.

5 years ago my partners and I started a farm to table restaurant called Granja Tzikin. We produce our own Goat Dairy, eggs and meat and grow a wide variety of organic veggies and fruits. The goods produced are served at our restaurant and sold at our store.

We also run a Permaculture design and project management cooperative. Over the last ten years we have built and designed a wide array of farms, water remediation systems, naturally built houses, and edible forest gardens.

We have had some wild successes and some catastrophic failures. Out of a burning desire to see more people take an active part in the permaculture revolution, we have created an accelerated learning program. The program is designed for anybody wishing to design and develop a permaculture project.

We use our library of designs, and didactic materials developed over a decade of teaching to bring you to demystify PC design and get you quickly to the point where you WILL be able to produce designs like this.

"It has been such an asset to our project working with Neal, and his team. What we love most is how attuned they were to our goals and vision, while educating and empowering us throughout the design process so we could begin thinking creatively and applying the principles of good permaculture design ourselves. They inspired us to really listen to and respect the natural features of the land and base our entire design around that – not only creating a much better plan, but saving us thousands of dollars and likely years of headache by advising on a different house location that better respects the natural contours of the land. They are also just such down-to-earth, warm, caring people to work with that it makes the whole process that much more enjoyable. From our first meeting with them, we knew they were true visionaries. Their love for the earth and their passion for caring for her is an electric, contagious energy that has fueled our own inspiration every step of the way – making the process an exciting dance of creativity as well a practical solution for regenerating our land."

I was lucky enough to be a teacher on numerous PDC’s and teach at other amazing farms like Atitlan Organics, Caoba Farms and Finca Por Venir. But when I began my career as a designer, I realized that even though many of my clients had taken PDCs, very few of them really understood how to go about designing their projects.

I think this is partly because many PDCs are first and foremost designed to be ‘mind blowing, life changing experiences’. Typically a PDC consists of taking a diverse group of people into an alternate reality.

Students live together for up to a month on a farm, surrounded by nature, continually stimulated and challenged. The core material is interspersed with hands-on practicals and tours of weird and wonderful examples of Permaculture projects.

At the end of the course students put what they have learned into practice by doing a design. Usually the design projects are imaginary. Students tend to go through the motions with their projects and then go home and forget all about it.

When they are finally ready to design a project for themselves, practical first steps like thorough site analysis and the use of the scale of permanence tend to get forgotten about.

Another reason for the failure of PDCs to really empower students to begin changing the world is the old adage, “those who can do, and those who can’t teach’. Many permaculture centers fail to make a living selling food, and so focus on teaching. People with successful farms and careers rarely teach.

As my own farm became more stable, and my career as a designer and project manager took off I moved away from teaching. But I never lost my love for it. Eventually I realized that in order to be a successful designer, I had to also empower my clients with the knowledge to carry out and maintain their projects.

Furthermore I began to realize that my other areas of interest in topics like – self actualisation, spirituality, psychology, mythology, business and development in 3rd world countries were just as valuable as my expertise in Permaculture.

This is what inspired me to create Evolve. It is a program designed to pass all that I have learned on my long and oftentimes painful journey (link to lessons learned) onto the next generation of dreamers united in their desire to change the world. The program works taking you through our EVOLVE program.

My intention is for CreaSol to continue to produce world class educational material for as long as I am alive. We will soon be documenting the entire process of turning a 100 acre farm, from an overgrazed wasteland into a thriving eco community and farm. We will produce detailed courses on topics like – Syntropic Agriculture, Holistic Animal management, bamboo house construction and much more.
